This class is designed to allow almost anyone to participate in a very mild form of Hatha (Ha =Sun, Tha= Moon) Yoga. It is a slower paced practice to make it more accessible to people of all sizes, ages, and fitness levels. This program helps an individual in the management of stress and in choosing a lifestyle that promotes health and vitality.

Restorative Yoga uses props and blankets to modify traditional yoga poses. The supportive postures gently open the body to deep relaxation and healing.

Whether you need assistance in rehabilitating your body from a medical condition, daily stress, or you are interested in prevention of diseases such as high blood pressure or heart disease, this program may be of assistance to you. These classes support people with and without limitations. We also have fun!

The class will consist of 60 minutes of warm up exercises and yoga postures with and without the assistance of a chair, pillows, and blocks. The last 15 minutes will be a practice called Yoga Nidra, or a guided deep relaxation exercise. Singing Tibetan healing bowls will accompany the deep relaxation exercise. This is a practice of mindfulness done primarily while resting on the back or in a chair, in a comfortable position. Deep relaxation clears the mind and creates a relaxed and energized experience in the body.

Benefits of taking this class are remarkable! They include increased mobility and flexibility, improved concentration, reduced blood pressure and heart rate, improved posture, and the ability to relax more deeply and sleep better at night.

Shawn has been practicing yoga since 2001, and he appreciates the system’s many benefits for physical and mental health. He practices the Vinyasa method of yoga, which links the body, breath, and mind through dynamic movement in a flowing sequence of poses. He approaches yoga with a sense of fun and joy, and he seeks to share that in his classes. He completed his 200-hour teacher training with Suddha Weixler at the Chicago Yoga Center, and he is registered with the Yoga Alliance. Shawn considers Suddha and Srivatsa Ramaswami to be his most influential teachers. He has also completed various workshops and intensives with numerous other senior teachers.

Sanskrit Mantra with Darlene Nelson

Sanskrit Mantra Class presented by certified instructor Darlene Nelson
Thu, Dec 29 (7:00 to 8:15 pm)

Sanskrit Mantras are sacred sounds that resonate with the body’s energy system. At its core, Sanskrit Mantra is a tool to free the mind of negative thought. By chanting these mantras the vibration of the chanter’s energy becomes raised. This higher vibration can help promote healing, create abundance, and enhance spiritual growth. The oldest spiritual scriptures of Hinduism, the Vedas, contain mantras dating back to 2000 B.C. The mantras were first passed down orally from generation to generation. Later they were written on palm leaves to be preserved. The first “librarians” were families who dedicated themselves to cataloging the mantras by subject and application. Each mantra had a “seer” who tested the mantra for its purpose. Mantras were held in trust for ages in both India and Tibet. Sanskrit Mantra chanting is a complementary spiritual practice that can be used by people of all faiths and spiritual traditions. Darlene, founder of Sanskrit Spirit in Chicago, has been a teacher and practitioner of vibrational and energy healing modalities since 2002. With co-author Karen Daughtry, she created My Helpful Healing Touch: A Guide for Empowering Children. This book teaches the basics of energy healing to “children” of all ages. Darlene has studied with Namadeva Archarya, Thomas Ashley Farrand, one of the West’s leading authorities on the application of mantra. She is certified by Sanatana Dharma Satsang, a nonprofit organization that teaches and promotes meditation disciplines from the Vedic and Tibetan traditions.
